Since the past two years we have been hearing about the recession, depression, double-dip and the collapse of banks, financial institutions and even governments. A default by a developed nation was not heard of until now but we now have the famous PIGS or Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain who are on the brink of being classified as defaulters by the banks that have lent to them.Now finally comes the government's forecast that India will grow at over 9.0-9.5% during this year and this could be topped up to the magical 10.0% growth figure that we have not ever had if the monsoon's are supportive. What does this mean for us. It simply means that India is growing both domestically and through exports, incomes are up, businesses have more markets to address, people are purchasing or will soon and there is a lot of competition that we have to win business against. The developed countries are not looking good but they have a desperate need to reduce costs and survive so they will be willing to look at alternative sources of products and services if these are offered at excellent costs. This could be a large window of opportunity for Indian businesses. The good news again is that China's costs have gone up so they are going to get more expensive than they have been, the yuan is also a little more convertible so their products and services will become more expensive in dollar terms. The bad news is that salaries in India are also rising and employment opportunities are opening up after a period of two years so companies have to now spend more on employee costs as a proportion of their income and are likely to have to increase billings and prices if they have to sustain and remain profitable. The shocker is of course the news that the Chinese have beaten us at our very own game of business process outsourcing, particularly in respect to shared services. China is now heading into a large lead over India in outsourcing and this could be very grim news for us. Are we upto the challenge? We will need to if we want to grow and sustain our business growth rates. What this means is that we have to spruce up, get better on oru marketing and communications, reach for more markets and pitch hard for business.
